The Memphremagog Science & Education Center (MemSEC) carries the vision of coming together to foster a deep understanding of the cultural and natural history of Lake Memphremagog. We share the critical role a healthy environment plays in the well-being of Newport and the entire Memphremagog Watershed.

Memphremagog’s Floating Classroom: The Northern Star

MemSEC’s transformative learning environment extends beyond traditional classrooms. Our flagship program, the Northern Star Floating Classroom, offers students all around Lake Memphremagog a unique opportunity for hands-on exploration. Aboard this vessel, participants:

  • Engage in Experiential Learning: Through direct observation and study, students gain a deeper appreciation for the lake’s watershed, the vital role water quality plays on the diverse biological community, and current issues impact the health and well-being of Lake Memphremagog.
  • Develop Fieldwork Skills: Utilizing state-of-the-art scientific equipment, students actively measure water quality parameters, fostering a practical understanding of environmental monitoring techniques. Gaining skills with hands-on science enables and empowers our students to more effectively learn about our local environment.
  • Embrace a Unique Learning Environment: The unforgettable experience of learning on the lake ignites a passion for science and caring for the place we call home.

The Gateway Center: Unveiling the Memphremagog Story

MemSEC is developing the Gateway Center, a world-class hybrid learning facility. This innovative space will feature interactive exhibits designed and curated by experts, fostering a deeper understanding of the lake’s cultural and ecological significance. Visitors will have the opportunity to:
